Ayutthaya Governor Proposes Friendship Province Initiative with Cambodia

Phnom Penh, July 13, 2024 - Mr. Weerachai Nakmas, the Governor of Thailand's Ayutthaya Province, has expressed a bold initiative aimed at fostering closer ties with Cambodia through the establishment of a "friendship province." This proposal seeks to enhance mutual cooperation and boost tourism between the two neighboring nations.

The announcement was made during a visit by Khuon Sudary, President of Cambodia's National Assembly, to Ayutthaya Province on July 12, 2024. Mr. Keo Piseth, Deputy Spokesperson of the National Assembly, confirmed that President Sudary intends to formally propose this initiative to the Cambodian government for further consideration.

"Samdach (NA President) will present this proposal to the Royal Government for collaborative deliberation," stated Mr. Piseth, underlining the significance of this bilateral effort in strengthening cultural and economic ties.

During her visit, President Khuon Sudary and a delegation from Cambodia's National Assembly explored various cultural and historical sites in Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its ancient temples and palaces. The trip aimed not only to deepen understanding of Thailand's rich historical legacy but also to bolster cultural exchange and tourism cooperation between the two nations.

The proposed "friendship province" initiative aligns with broader regional efforts to promote cross-border tourism and economic partnerships. If implemented, it could potentially open new avenues for collaboration in tourism promotion, heritage conservation, and economic development between Ayutthaya Province and its Cambodian counterpart.

For Cambodia and Thailand, both nations with rich cultural heritage and a shared border, initiatives like these hold promise for fostering enduring friendships and sustainable development across the region.
